The Numbers
What is cost, value? I've been climbing and traveling instead of working for the past month. Was it worth it?...
Let's start with the numbers:
Money
Apparent Costs
Gear/ Misc= $400
Food= $250
Gas= $310
Opportunity Costs
Wages= $4000
Total Costs
$4960
This is a hard number to look at. My trip was definitely worth the Food/ Gas cost (think of the gear costs as initial start up costs, so they won't be on future trips). Was my trip worth $4960, No- That's a lot of money!
Time
Time Cost= 1 Month
Time Worth= 2+ years (2 weeks vacation per year)
From this perspective you can see it only took one month to accomplish more than two years of personal time. This is a great time "savings", and is consolation to the fact that the trip was monetarily very expensive.
Ultimately, I think the solution for me will be to get a job which has ample personal time, such as teaching.

Eli: kudos on your new video--what breath-taking scenery! I really enjoyed the content--seeing a few of the climbs reminded me of my stay at Outward Bound where climbing was a central feature of the program. Your edits are delightful and the music is a perfect background like some of the sounds that back up some of the racing we used to do on the Playstation. Bravo, Bravo Eli!
ReplyDeleteHanging out with Kris, Chris, Andrew and Sara in Yosemite - can't put a price on that!
ReplyDeleteLivin it up in the Valley with good people... or stuck in an office somewhere? It was definitely worth it Eli!
ReplyDeleteI agree, the ability to go on an extended trip is priceless. Wish I would have realized that before it was too late!
ReplyDeleteGood to here from all you guys. Talk to you soon.
ReplyDeleteI've been working steadily for the past fifteen years of my life -- and the opportunity to be doing what you love cannot be measured by mere dollars and cents. Every trip I've gone on with you has been more than worth it, no matter what the measure.
ReplyDeletePeace, Eli.
