Money is Time is Freedom (?)

Well my car broke down again, no big deal right? Wrong. I'm at an impass. Should I continue to throw money at a shitty old car, or buy a new one? Either way, what little savings I have will disappear, and with it my dreams of an "extended" vacation anytime soon. I can hardly stomach signing a 6 month lease to my apartment, so a 5 year car loan seems unbearable.

Days like today make me wonder what I'm working for. Jon once told me there's a leisure class as both ends of the social spectrum. I'm stuck somewhere in between.

I stare at this photo every time I open my computer. Racking up for Castleton Tower in a time without worry or obligation. I wonder if those times are completely behind me.

  1. Real life is a bitch sometimes huh. It sucks when you work so long to build up enough money to do something cool, then for some unforeseen reason it all disappears. You are very fortunate though because they place that I would love to take an 'extended vacation' to is already right in your back yard. You get out climbing more than most can hope for, and you dont let work become your life. thats what really counts in the end.

  2. Thanks for the kind words Justin. Yeah, I know I have it pretty good, which makes me feel petty for complaining. It's just hard growing up and having to make real decisions.

  3. Those times of worry free days filled with adventure are only behind you if you choose to put them there. Life is too short to fill your days with uncertainty and confusion. If you want to head out on an extended vacation, set it as a goal and dont let anything stand in your way!

  5. I don't think that post could have come at a more appropriate time. Personally I was having a day where I entertained the notion of dirtbaggin it! At any rate check this out. Helped to put things in perspective for me.

  6. Chris,
Thanks for the link. Funny, when Andrew read it, he sent me another link, coincidently to another TNB:

  7. The adventures never stop, man. They're just different in tone and texture. Being a parent, husband, watching those you love age and die -- these will also test your mettle.

It's the little moments in between, though, which sustain us: laughs shared over beer or a campfire (or both, ideally); time in the sun with old friends and new; the making of memory. This is the cement between all the pieces of a life, and it's probably trite to say that they are leavened by the love and goodwill we bear to the people sharing it with us, but there it is.

The mountains and rivers endure. They'll always be waiting for you.
